What Does an Interior Designer Actually Do? (And How I Can Help You)

Recently, I had not one, but two conversations that made me realize something important: even people who know and love me sometimes have no idea what I actually do as an interior designer. So today, I’m setting the record straight—and sharing exactly how I work with clients to help them create homes that feel effortless, elevated, and completely personal.
Let’s start with a little story.
I was having lunch with a good friend—someone I’ve known for years and who is also a well-respected realtor in our area. We were talking about ways to support each other’s businesses when she paused and said, “Wait…what exactly do you do again?”
I blinked. “I’m an interior designer,” I said. “I help people make their homes beautiful, functional, and personal—from start to finish.”
I left that lunch a little stunned. If she didn’t fully understand what I do, how many others might not either?
Then—to keep the theme going—I visited one of my closest friend’s homes the following week. She had just picked up some new furniture pieces (which she very sweetly apologized for not running by me). And while I was so happy she treated herself to something fresh, the layout and scale just weren’t quite right for her space.
Of course, we opened a bottle of wine and got to work. A little styling, some rearranging, a few adjustments—and the room looked so much better. She was genuinely happy with how it turned out. But as I left, I thought, Why didn’t she just ask? I would’ve loved to help from the beginning and saved her the guesswork.
So here we are. If you’ve ever wondered what I actually do as a designer and how I might be able to help you—here’s the breakdown.
