New Year, New Trends

5 Interior Design Ideas Trending in 2023

When you hear the word trends you may immediately think about fashion but that’s not the only industry where what’s hot and what’s not is keenly watched. Interior design trends are released at the start of each year and then updated for each season.

However, just like how all fashion trends won’t work for everyone, not all trends in interior design are necessarily right for every home. My thought is if you love something, you should get it. But before you buy, ask yourself if you really love it or you’re just seeing it everywhere and everyone else has it so you think you love it. Chances are, if you have any doubts you don’t love it that much and it’s a trend you will quickly get sick of.

Also consider that while it’s easy to hide a piece of clothing that didn’t work for you in the back of your closet, undoing a trend in your home design can be much more challenging—possibly time-consuming and expensive. As an interior designer, my job is to keep track of the trends in my field and then use them for inspiration as I work with you to design your dream space.

All that being said, here are five interior design trends I’m seeing to start the year:

Arches and Curved Lines

Move over, straight lines! Well-placed arches can add interest to areas like doorways, ceilings and window seats, which are usually linear. Curved lines, a nod to historical architecture, can be brought into design in furniture and accessories such as mirrors and the way built-ins are styled.

Non-white Kitchens

Three cheers for cooking with color! While there’s nothing wrong with having a classic all-white kitchen, adding warmth and color to this room using tile and texture will result in a look that's more you. Consider jewel tones or earth tones, depending on your personal style.

Statement Walls

Make a giant personal statement! Target a wall that gets a lot of eyeballs on it via Zoom calls or turn a wall in your dining room into a work of art by using design to showcase your personality. Whether it’s something “out there” or more subtle, it’s sure to be a conversation starter.

Neon Color Palettes

For daring personalities only! From fabric and flooring to fixtures, more eye-popping neon color palettes are on display this year. This distinct décor, while certainly striking, is certainly not for everyone, and it’s not likely to be a trend that has staying power for the long term.

Vintage and Antique Furniture

An investment in quality! There’s nothing wrong with “fast furniture” but it’s wonderful to see the move toward vintage or antique furniture. Timeless pieces you love will serve you well today and become heirlooms your family will enjoy far into the future.

Surprised? Inspired? Perplexed? As I noted earlier, just because something is trending doesn’t mean you need to adopt it for yourself. Your home needs to feel special and meaningful for you—whether or not it incorporates today’s trends. What’s in today may be out tomorrow but living in a home you love will never be out of style—unlike leggings with high heels and skinny jeans with sneakers, two fashion don’ts for 2023.
